Executive search firms in Bangalore, compared

The one Indian city where almost every global firm has real presence — so the question is not who covers Bangalore, but which type suits your mandate.

Global majors · Indian firms · Boutiques · Staffing

In short

Bangalore is unusual: most global firms have genuine local presence, so coverage is not the differentiator. Fit is.

  • Global majors — Egon Zehnder, Korn Ferry, Spencer Stuart, Heidrick, Russell Reynolds. Board seats and CEO succession.
  • Established Indian firms — ABC Consultants, EMA Partners, Accord, Stanton Chase. Senior leadership at Indian corporates.
  • Specialist boutiques — narrow functional mandates. Talfino sits here, and Bangalore is where a boutique has the least structural advantage.
  • Staffing — hiring at scale, roles with active supply.

Bangalore is the one Indian city outside Mumbai and Delhi where the global search firms have genuine on-the-ground presence rather than a remote desk. Egon Zehnder splits its 60-person India team across Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore. Korn Ferry runs a product development centre here. Spencer Stuart, Heidrick & Struggles, Russell Reynolds, EMA Partners and Transearch all cover the city directly.

Which means the question here is not who has presence — almost everyone does. It is which type of firm suits the mandate you actually have.

The four types operating in Bangalore

Category 1

Global majors with real Bangalore presence

Egon Zehnder, Korn Ferry, Spencer Stuart, Heidrick & Struggles, Russell Reynolds.

Egon Zehnder opened in India in 1995 and describes Bangalore as its technology and innovation hub. Korn Ferry combines search with leadership and organisational advisory. Spencer Stuart is known for methodical execution on board mandates; Heidrick is frequently engaged during organisational change; Russell Reynolds positions around future-ready leadership.

These are the right answer when the process itself must carry weight — board appointments, CEO succession, or a search an international investor base needs to see run by a recognised name. Highest fees in the market, retained only, and you get a consultant plus research team rather than a single owner.

Right for: board seats, CEO and CXO succession at large or listed companies, multi-country mandates, and searches needing leadership assessment alongside the hire.
Category 2

Established Indian and pan-Asian firms

ABC Consultants, EMA Partners, Accord India, Stanton Chase, Transearch, Cornerstone, RGF.

ABC Consultants has operated for over fifty years with offices across the major Indian cities. Accord runs retained search from Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore. EMA Partners operates as part of a global partnership with Indian roots. Several hold AESC membership, which functions as an industry assurance signal.

More accessible on fee than the global majors, more responsive on mid-market mandates, and still able to reach across several Indian cities if your search spans Bangalore and Pune or Hyderabad.

Right for: senior leadership at Indian corporates and large family groups, multi-city Indian searches, and clients wanting an established name without global-major pricing.
Category 3

Specialist boutiques

Firms built around one function, sector or type of mandate. Talfino sits here — finance and technology leadership only.

In Bangalore the boutique argument is different from other cities. The pool is deep and the global firms are present, so a boutique is not filling a coverage gap. It is offering something else: a partner who personally owns the mandate, knows one function properly, and does not delegate judgement to a research team.

The trade-off is real and worth naming. No global network. No institutional weight for a board process. Limited capacity. And most boutiques have no long published placement record.

Right for: functionally narrow mandates where the pool is hard to map — a GCC Finance Head who can bridge US GAAP and India statutory, say — and confidential replacements where you want one person accountable.
Category 4

Volume recruitment and staffing

Michael Page, Randstad, TeamLease, ManpowerGroup, Adecco, and the large Bangalore tech-staffing firms.

Built for throughput, with large databases and many consultants. Genuinely effective at mid-to-senior professional hiring at scale, and the right answer when you need several people quickly.

Less suited to confidential mandates or roles where the right person is settled and not looking, because the model rewards speed over depth of mapping.

Right for: several hires at once, engineering roles with genuine active supply, and situations where speed matters more than exhaustive coverage.

What is specifically hard about a Bangalore search

  1. Everyone is being approached. The same density that gives you a deep pool means your target candidates hear from recruiters weekly. Generic outreach is ignored. A credible, specific first message matters more here than anywhere else in India.
  2. Attrition cuts both ways. Bangalore has the highest leadership attrition of the major Indian cities. Easier to recruit into; harder to keep people in.
  3. Counter-offers are aggressive and well funded, particularly at well-capitalised product companies. Managing that is part of the mandate, not an afterthought.
  4. Compensation is the national benchmark and expectations are set accordingly. Candidates know their market value precisely.
  5. Commute is a real factor. A move from Whitefield to Electronic City is a genuine quality-of-life change and does come up at offer stage. Office location narrows your pool more than most clients expect.
  6. “Built from zero” is scarcer than it looks. Plenty of leaders have run a large centre. Fewer have stood one up. If your first hire has to build a function alone, screen for that specifically.

Questions worth asking any Bangalore firm

  1. Who personally runs my search, and for how many hours a week? In a large firm the pitch team and the delivery team are often different people.
  2. How many mandates are live right now? Twenty active searches across four consultants is not senior attention regardless of the proposal.
  3. Will you show me the target map before approaching anyone? Firms doing genuine mapping can. Firms working a database usually cannot.
  4. Is the fee on fixed CTC or total CTC? In India total CTC includes employer provident fund, gratuity and variable pay. On a ₹90L package the difference runs to several lakh.
  5. How do you handle counter-offers? In Bangalore this is not a hypothetical, and a firm without a clear answer has not closed many senior mandates here.
  6. What does the replacement guarantee actually cover? Replacement only, or a refund? Does it apply if you terminate, or only if the candidate resigns?

Where we are the wrong choice

Bangalore is the city where a boutique has the least structural advantage, and it would be dishonest to pretend otherwise. For a board appointment, CEO succession, or a mandate needing formal leadership assessment, Egon Zehnder, Korn Ferry or Spencer Stuart are better suited — they have local partners and the methodology to match.

Same for volume engineering hiring, roles below senior leadership, and functions outside finance and technology. Full list at who we are not for.

Where we do fit

One narrow claim. The hardest profile in Bangalore right now is not a CTO — there are many. It is the finance leader who can report under US GAAP or IFRS to an overseas parent while carrying India statutory obligations: Companies Act 2013, GST, TDS, ROC filings, transfer pricing. Most strong candidates have one side. Those with both sit inside established capability centres along the Outer Ring Road and Whitefield, and are not on job boards.

Which is the best executive search firm in Bangalore?

It depends on the mandate. Bangalore is unusual in that most global firms have genuine local presence — Egon Zehnder splits its India team across Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore, and Korn Ferry, Spencer Stuart, Heidrick & Struggles and Russell Reynolds all cover the city. Those suit board and CXO mandates. Established Indian firms such as ABC Consultants, EMA Partners and Accord suit senior leadership at Indian corporates. Specialist boutiques suit functionally narrow searches. Staffing firms suit hiring at scale.

Do global executive search firms have offices in Bangalore?

Yes, more than in any Indian city outside Mumbai and Delhi. Egon Zehnder describes Bangalore as its technology and innovation hub and has had an India presence since 1995. Korn Ferry runs a product development centre in the city. Spencer Stuart, Heidrick & Struggles, Russell Reynolds, EMA Partners, Stanton Chase and Transearch all cover Bangalore directly rather than remotely.

Is a boutique worth using in Bangalore when the global firms are all present?

Only for a specific reason. A boutique is not filling a coverage gap in Bangalore — it is offering partner-level ownership and depth in one function. That is worth paying for on a functionally narrow mandate where the pool is hard to map, or a confidential replacement where you want one accountable person. For a board appointment or CEO succession, the global firms are better suited.

What makes hiring executives in Bangalore harder than elsewhere in India?

Density. The same concentration that gives you a deep pool means your target candidates are approached weekly, so generic outreach is ignored. Attrition is the highest of the major Indian cities, counter-offers are aggressive and well funded, and compensation expectations are the national benchmark. Commute is also a genuine constraint — office location narrows the realistic pool more than most clients expect.

What does a CFO or GCC Finance Head cost in Bangalore?

Indicatively 60 to 90 lakh rupees fixed base for a GCC Finance Head on a first India hire, 85 to 130 lakh for an established centre, and 80 to 180 lakh for a CFO depending on stage and sector. Bangalore is the national benchmark, with other Indian cities running 5 to 30 percent below. Full ranges are published free.

How do I check a firm will genuinely map the market rather than search a database?

Ask whether they will show you the target map — named organisations and named levels — before approaching anyone. Firms doing genuine mapping can produce one. Ask who personally runs the search and how many mandates are live. And ask how they handle counter-offers, which in Bangalore is not a hypothetical question.
