In short
Kerala offers finance and technology leadership at 15–25% below Bangalore with materially better retention, plus one pool no other Indian market has at scale: senior finance leaders returning from the Gulf with IFRS and group consolidation experience.
- Infopark Kochi and Technopark Trivandrum — IT services, product, GCC leadership.
- Kochi CBD — largely promoter-led group finance across NBFCs, healthcare, logistics.
- Very long tenures: excellent retention, harder search. Direct approach is essential.
Kerala is the most under-used talent market in South India. It produces a disproportionate share of India’s Chartered Accountants, has a genuine IT and GCC base at Infopark and Technopark, and carries something no other Indian market does at scale: a steady flow of senior finance leaders returning from the Gulf with international reporting experience.
The three pools worth knowing about
Infopark, Kochi
IT services, product engineering and a growing GCC cluster. The deepest technology and shared-services leadership pool in the state.
Technopark, Trivandrum
One of India’s oldest IT parks. Strong on engineering leadership, product and long-tenure delivery management.
Kochi CBD & Ernakulam
Corporate and group finance — NBFCs, gold and jewellery groups, healthcare, hospitality, logistics. Largely promoter-led.
Returning Gulf finance leaders
Malayali finance leaders who spent 10–20 years in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Doha or Muscat and want to come home. Rarely on job boards.
The Gulf-return pool is the one nobody maps
A significant share of Gulf finance leadership is Malayali. Many reach a point — children’s schooling, ageing parents, visa fatigue — where they want a senior role back in Kerala or elsewhere in India, and will accept a real pay cut to get it.
They bring IFRS, group consolidation and multinational reporting experience that is scarce in the domestic Kerala market. They are also almost invisible to conventional search, because they are not applying to Indian job postings from Abu Dhabi.
We run both sides of that corridor, so this is a pool we map as a matter of course rather than as a special exercise.
What leadership costs in Kerala
Indicative fixed base ranges, compiled from published surveys, advertised compensation and market reporting. Bonus sits on top.

| Role | Base (₹ LPA) | vs Bangalore |
|---|---|---|
| CFO — listed / large group | ₹70–130L | ~20% lower |
| CFO — mid-market / promoter-led | ₹45–85L | ~25% lower |
| Financial Controller | ₹32–60L | ~25% lower |
| GCC Finance Head | ₹45–75L | ~15% lower |
| VP Engineering / Delivery Head | ₹50–95L | ~25% lower |
| Head of FP&A | ₹28–52L | ~20% lower |
Cost is genuinely lower and retention genuinely better, which makes Kerala a sensible location for a shared-services or engineering centre. The trade-off is a thinner pool at the very top — for a first-of-its-kind build-from-zero mandate, Bangalore still has more people who have done it.
What is specifically hard about hiring here
- Very long tenures. Fifteen and twenty year tenures are common. That is excellent for your retention and difficult for your search — a settled candidate needs a genuine scope argument, not a raise.
- Promoter-led governance dominates outside IT. Most Kerala group businesses are family controlled, and the CFO manages a principal rather than a board. Candidates from professionally managed multinationals frequently underestimate how different that is.
- Relocation into Kerala is a harder sell than out of it. Bringing a leader in from Bangalore or Mumbai carries real first-year attrition risk unless there is a family reason to be there. The Gulf-return pool is usually the better answer.
- Malayalam matters in promoter-facing and plant-facing roles. Not in IT or GCC settings. Worth establishing at brief stage.
How we run a Kerala search
- Brief — establishing whether the role is IT/GCC, corporate group, or plant-facing. Three different pools.
- The Approved Map — you sign off named organisations and levels before anyone is approached. Essential in a small market where word travels.
- Both pools mapped — domestic Kerala and the Gulf-return population, which most firms ignore entirely.
- Written assessment per candidate, covering promoter-fit and relocation risk explicitly.
- Offer and first 90 days, with a written update every Friday.
Which executive search firms cover Kerala?
Most national and global firms run Kerala mandates from Bangalore or Chennai rather than holding local relationships, so the pool they reach is largely what is visible on LinkedIn. Talfino works the market directly from Tamil Nadu, including the Gulf-return population that conventional search does not map.
What does a CFO cost in Kochi or Trivandrum?
Indicatively 70 to 130 lakh rupees fixed base for a listed or large group CFO and 45 to 85 lakh at mid-market or promoter-led level, roughly 20 to 25 percent below Bangalore. Financial Controller runs 32 to 60 lakh. Retention is materially better than in the metros, which often offsets the thinner senior pool.
Why is the Gulf-return pool important for Kerala hiring?
A significant share of Gulf finance leadership is Malayali, and many reach a point where family reasons pull them back to India. They bring IFRS, group consolidation and multinational reporting experience that is scarce in the domestic Kerala market, and they are largely invisible to conventional search because they are not applying to Indian job postings from Abu Dhabi.
Is Kerala a good location for a GCC or shared-services centre?
For a centre replicating an established model, yes — cost is 15 to 25 percent below Bangalore, attrition is materially lower, and Infopark and Technopark provide a real technology base. For a first-of-its-kind build-from-zero mandate, Bangalore still has more leaders who have done exactly that before.
Do finance leaders in Kerala need Malayalam?
Not in IT services or GCC settings, where English is the working language. In promoter-facing and plant-facing finance roles within Kerala group businesses it is a genuine advantage, and worth establishing at brief stage rather than discovering midway through a shortlist.
