GCC Finance Head Recruitment in Bangalore

The rare profile combining US GAAP fluency with India statutory depth — what it costs, where it sits, and why it is the first hire rather than the third.

Whitefield · Outer Ring Road · Electronic City · Electronics City · CBD

Roughly four in five US and European companies setting up an India capability centre look at Bangalore first, and the finance leadership hire is usually the one they underestimate. Engineering leadership is a known quantity to a US parent. A Finance Head who has to satisfy your US auditors and the Registrar of Companies is not.

The profile that is genuinely scarce

The scarcity is not "finance leaders in Bangalore" — there are thousands. It is the overlap of three things in one person:

  1. US GAAP fluency at a reporting level. Not familiarity. The ability to close a month under your parent's policy, handle intercompany and transfer pricing documentation, and survive a PBC list from a US audit firm without your Controller in California doing it for them.
  2. India statutory depth. Companies Act 2013, GST, TDS, ROC annual filings, Transfer Pricing certification under Rule 10D, PF and professional tax, and the SEZ or STPI compliance that comes with the incentive structure your entity chose.
  3. Comfort as a solo function. The first Finance Head in a GCC has no team for the first six months. Senior people from a 40-person finance department in a large enterprise frequently struggle here, and it is rarely visible on the CV.

Where this usually goes wrong: a generalist firm sends five strong candidates, all Big Four-trained, all with statutory depth, none of whom have actually reported under US GAAP to a foreign parent. The gap surfaces at the first quarterly close or the first audit, and by then you have lost two quarters.

Where the talent actually sits in Bangalore

Mapping this role means knowing which employers produce the profile. The concentration is uneven across the city.

Whitefield & ITPL

Large established GCCs — the deepest pool of people who have run finance for a US parent, but also the most settled and hardest to move without a step up in scope.

Outer Ring Road (Bellandur–Marathahalli)

The highest density of mid-size technology GCCs. Most of our GCC Finance Head placements come from this corridor. Commute quality is a real factor in offer acceptance here.

Electronic City

Larger IT services and product engineering. Strong controllership, thinner on people who have built a function from zero.

CBD & Koramangala / Indiranagar

Startup and fintech finance leadership. Strong on fundraising and investor reporting, variable on US GAAP unless the company had US investors.

What a GCC Finance Head costs in Bangalore

Indicative fixed base ranges, compiled from published surveys, advertised compensation and market reporting. Bonus sits on top.

RoleBase (₹ LPA)Typical bonus
GCC Finance Head — first India hire, US-backed₹60–90L20–30%
GCC Finance Head — established centre, 50+ staff₹85–130L25–35%
Financial Controller — US GAAP reporting₹45–80L15–25%
Site Leader / Country Manager₹100–180L30–40% + LTI

The premium is real and it catches US parents out. A US-backed GCC pays meaningfully above a domestic Indian company for the same title, because the US GAAP requirement thins the pool sharply. Budgeting at domestic Bangalore benchmarks is the single most common reason a first India search stalls at offer stage.

Hiring order for a Bangalore GCC

This sits inside the wider India-entry decision. Our complete guide for US companies hiring in India covers entity versus EOR, the full hiring sequence, timelines and the mistakes we see most often.

The sequencing question comes up more often than the sourcing one, and the answer surprises most founders: the Finance Head goes before the engineering leader, even when engineering is the entire reason for the centre.

Without someone owning statutory compliance from month one, you accumulate filing exposure that is expensive and slow to unwind, and your US Controller cannot cover it remotely — the filings require a local signatory who understands what they are signing. Engineering hiring can run two months behind without permanent cost. Compliance cannot.

  1. Finance Head or Controller — statutory ownership, payroll, entity compliance
  2. Site Leader — if the centre will exceed roughly 50 people, otherwise fold into Finance Head initially
  3. Engineering leadership — VP Engineering or Director, once there is an entity that can legally employ and pay them
  4. HR lead — usually underestimated; India employment law diverges sharply from US at-will assumptions
  5. Functional leads — as headcount justifies

Notice periods, and why your timeline is longer than you think

India notice periods at this level run 60 to 90 days, and buyouts are common but not universal. A US parent planning a Q1 start date for a Finance Head needs the offer signed by early November, not January. Building your timeline backwards from the date you need someone in the seat — rather than forwards from when you start searching — is the difference between a Q1 and a Q2 start.

How we run this search

  1. Brief. Your reporting structure, which entity type you chose, whether SEZ or STPI applies, and what your US Controller will and will not keep doing.
  2. Target map, approved by you before any approach. Named GCCs, named levels, off-limits list agreed. Nothing goes to market until you have signed off.
  3. Direct approach by the partner running the search, anonymised until interest is mutual.
  4. Written assessment per candidate — what they have run, what they have not, comp expectation, notice period, and the specific risk we would watch.
  5. Offer and first 90 days — counter-offer management, notice-period risk, post-joining check-ins.

Calls run in ET or PT. Billing in USD. Contingency mandates are invoiced only when your hire actually starts.

What does a GCC Finance Head cost in Bangalore?

Indicatively 60 to 90 lakh rupees fixed base for a first India hire at a US-backed centre, plus a 20 to 30 percent bonus. An established centre with 50-plus staff runs 85 to 130 lakh. US-backed GCCs pay above domestic Bangalore benchmarks because the US GAAP requirement narrows the candidate pool considerably.

How long does it take to hire a GCC Finance Head in Bangalore?

A first calibration shortlist within 48 hours of a full brief, and typically five to nine weeks from brief to signed offer. Add 60 to 90 days for notice period, which is standard at this level in India and is the part US parents most often leave out of their timeline.

Should we hire the Finance Head or the engineering leader first?

The Finance Head, in almost every case. Without someone owning statutory compliance from month one you accumulate filing exposure that is expensive to unwind, and a US-based Controller cannot cover it remotely because the filings require a local signatory. Engineering hiring can run behind without permanent cost.

Why is US GAAP plus India statutory such a hard combination to find?

Most India finance leaders are deep in Companies Act, GST, TDS and ROC compliance but have never reported under US GAAP to a foreign parent. Those who have usually sit inside established GCCs and are not visible on job boards. Finding the overlap requires mapping specific employers rather than searching a database.

Which parts of Bangalore should we look at?

The Outer Ring Road corridor between Bellandur and Marathahalli has the highest density of mid-size technology GCCs and produces most of this profile. Whitefield and ITPL hold the larger established centres. Commute quality materially affects offer acceptance in Bangalore, so office location is worth discussing early.

Do you work with companies that have no India entity yet?

Yes. Pre-incorporation searches are common, though the offer cannot be issued until the entity can legally employ. We usually recommend running the search in parallel with incorporation so the Finance Head starts close to the entity going live.
