In short
South India hosts most of the country’s capability-centre workforce and a large share of its manufacturing finance talent — and it is the region global search firms cover least well, because their India offices sit in Mumbai, Delhi and Bangalore.
- Chennai — manufacturing, cost and plant finance, BFSI back office, the OMR GCC corridor.
- Bangalore — deepest overall pool, the most leaders who have built a centre from zero.
- Hyderabad — GCC leadership at scale, lower attrition, 5–10% lower cost.
- Coimbatore — engineering, textiles, auto components, promoter-led group finance. 20–30% below Bangalore.
- Kochi & Trivandrum — IT services and product GCCs, deep CA pipeline, Gulf-returning finance leaders.
South India now hosts the majority of India’s capability-centre and technology workforce, and a substantial share of its manufacturing finance talent. It is also the region the global search firms cover least well — their India offices cluster in Mumbai, Delhi and Bangalore, and everything from Coimbatore to Kochi tends to be handled remotely by someone who has never worked the market.
We are based in Tamil Nadu and work these markets directly.

Why South India is a different hiring market
- Longer tenures, lower attrition. Ten and fifteen year tenures are normal in Chennai, Coimbatore and Kerala in a way they are not in Gurugram or Mumbai. That produces real institutional depth — and it means the strongest people are settled, not searching. Reaching them takes a credible direct approach, not a job posting.
- Manufacturing and cost finance depth. Standard costing, inventory, working capital, plant economics. Chennai and Coimbatore produce this instinctively because the industrial base demands it, and it is genuinely scarce in software-dominated markets.
- A deep Chartered Accountant pipeline. Tamil Nadu and Kerala produce a disproportionate share of India’s CAs. Many spend their first decade in the region before moving to the Gulf, Bangalore or overseas — which is also why we can map that population wherever it ends up.
- Local preference is real. Candidates who have built lives in Chennai, Coimbatore or Kochi move within the city readily and out of it rarely. Relocating a leader into these markets carries higher first-year attrition risk than clients expect. Hiring locally is usually the lower-risk path, and it is why local network matters more here than in Bangalore.
- Language matters in specific roles. Not in most corporate or GCC settings. But in plant-facing, supplier-facing and promoter-facing finance, Tamil or Malayalam is a genuine advantage and worth raising at brief stage rather than discovering mid-shortlist.
Where the global firms are weakest
A large search firm running a Coimbatore or Kochi mandate is usually doing it from Bangalore or Mumbai, with a researcher who has no relationships in that market. The candidate pool they reach is the one visible on LinkedIn.
That is the gap we work in. Not competing for a Mumbai board seat — being the firm that actually knows who runs finance at the mid-market groups in Tiruppur, the GCCs on OMR, and the product companies at Infopark.
Andhra Pradesh and Visakhapatnam
Vizag is the emerging market in the region — port and logistics, pharma manufacturing, and a state government pushing hard on IT and GCC investment. The senior finance pool is thin relative to Chennai or Hyderabad, and most leadership mandates there are filled by relocating someone from Hyderabad or Chennai. We treat it as a corridor market rather than a standalone one, and will say so rather than pretend to a local network we do not have.
What we place across South India
Finance leadership
CFO, Finance Director, India Finance Head, Financial Controller, Head of FP&A, Head of Costing, Treasury and Compliance.
GCC leadership
GCC Finance Heads and Controllers for US, UK and Gulf parents, with the US GAAP plus India statutory combination.
Technology leadership
CTO, VP Engineering, Delivery Director, Head of Product. Assessed on whether they have scaled or maintained.
Promoter-led groups
Family and promoter businesses across Tamil Nadu and Kerala, where the CFO manages a principal rather than a board.
How we run a South India search
- Brief. Whether the role is plant-facing, corporate or GCC — three genuinely different candidate pools that one job description usually blurs.
- The Approved Map. You sign off the target list — named organisations, named levels, off-limits agreed in writing — before we contact anyone. In a low-attrition market this matters more, because there is no second chance with a settled candidate.
- Direct approach by the partner, anonymised until interest is mutual.
- Written assessment per candidate, covering relocation and retention risk explicitly.
- Offer and first 90 days, plus a written update every Friday whether or not there is news.
Which is the best executive search firm for South India?
The global firms — Korn Ferry, Egon Zehnder, Spencer Stuart — are the established choice for board-level mandates at large listed companies, but their India presence is concentrated in Mumbai, Delhi and Bangalore, and markets like Coimbatore, Kochi and Vizag are typically covered remotely. For finance and technology leadership specifically in South India, a regionally based boutique with direct market relationships will usually reach a wider pool. Talfino is based in Tamil Nadu and works these markets directly.
What makes South India different as a hiring market?
Longer tenures and materially lower attrition, deep cost and plant finance capability from the manufacturing base, a disproportionate share of India's Chartered Accountant pipeline, and a strong local-preference dynamic that makes relocating leaders in riskier than clients expect. Together these mean the strongest candidates are settled rather than searching, so direct approach matters more than advertising.
Do you cover Kerala and Coimbatore, or only the metros?
Both directly. Kochi and Trivandrum have a substantial IT services and GCC base plus a strong CA pipeline and a steady flow of finance leaders returning from the Gulf. Coimbatore has genuine depth in engineering, textiles, auto components and promoter-led group finance. Neither is well served by firms operating from Bangalore or Mumbai.
What does finance leadership cost in South India?
Indicatively, Chennai runs 10 to 15 percent below Bangalore, Kerala 15 to 25 percent below, and Coimbatore 20 to 30 percent below. Hyderabad sits 5 to 10 percent below Bangalore. Full ranges by role and city are published free in our 2026 pay bands, with sourcing stated openly.
Do you cover Andhra Pradesh and Visakhapatnam?
We run mandates there, but treat Vizag as a corridor market rather than one where we hold a deep local network. The senior finance pool is thinner than Chennai or Hyderabad, and most leadership roles are filled by relocating someone from those cities. We will tell you that upfront rather than claim coverage we do not have.
Is language a requirement for finance roles in Tamil Nadu or Kerala?
Not in most corporate or GCC settings, where English is the working language. In plant-facing, supplier-facing and promoter-facing finance roles, Tamil or Malayalam is a genuine advantage and worth establishing at brief stage rather than discovering midway through a shortlist.
