In short
Chennai has four types of search firm, and the useful question is which your mandate belongs to.
- Global firms — Stanton Chase, EMA Partners, Cornerstone, Korn Ferry, Egon Zehnder. Board seats and CXO succession.
- Established consultancies — Covenant, ABC Consultants, Alp. Senior leadership at Chennai corporates, multiple mandates.
- Specialist boutiques — narrow functional mandates, confidential replacements. Talfino sits here.
- Staffing firms — hiring at scale, roles with active supply.
What matters more than the firm: Chennai has long tenures, low attrition, real cost and plant finance depth, and three distinct candidate pools that briefs routinely treat as one.
Search “executive search firms in Chennai” and nearly everything that comes back is a firm’s own landing page saying it is the best. There is no neutral list. This page is an attempt at one — who genuinely operates here, what each type is suited to, and how to work out which you need.
We are one of the firms on this page. We have said plainly below where we are the wrong choice, and we have described our competitors accurately rather than dismissively.
Who actually operates in Chennai
Global firms with a Chennai office or desk
Stanton Chase, EMA Partners, Cornerstone, Korn Ferry, Egon Zehnder, Heidrick & Struggles.
Stanton Chase maintains a Chennai presence and covers the sectors that define the city — automotive, IT services and global capability centres — as part of a network spanning dozens of countries. EMA Partners and Cornerstone both hold international networks and established Chennai relationships. Korn Ferry and Egon Zehnder serve the market largely from Bangalore and Mumbai.
These are the right choice when the process itself has to carry weight — a board appointment at a listed group, CXO succession, or a search where an international investor base needs to see a recognised name on the mandate. They carry the highest fees, work retained, and assign a consultant plus research team rather than a single owner.
Established Chennai and India-wide consultancies
Covenant Consultants, ABC Consultants, Alp Consulting, T2 Innovations, Accord India.
Covenant Consultants is among the longest-established Chennai-headquartered firms, operating for over two decades with a large delivery team and coverage spanning executive search, RPO and broader HR consulting across many sectors. ABC Consultants and Accord bring national reach with genuine Chennai relationships. Alp Consulting and T2 Innovations sit in similar territory.
Generally more accessible on fee than the global firms and more responsive on mid-market mandates, with the capacity to run several searches at once. Breadth is the trade-off — a firm covering seventy sectors is not specialised in any one of them.
Specialist boutiques
Firms focused on one function or one type of mandate. Talfino sits here — finance and technology leadership only.
The argument for a boutique in Chennai specifically: this is a low-attrition market. Ten and fifteen year tenures are normal, which means the strongest candidates are settled and not searching. Reaching them takes a credible individual approach from someone who knows the market, not a database query.
The argument against is real. No global network. No institutional weight for a board process. Limited capacity — a boutique running four mandates cannot take a fifth. And most have no long published placement record.
Staffing and volume recruitment
Hire Glocal, Bloom Consulting Services, VT Manpower, BSRI Solutions, Michael Page, Randstad, TeamLease.
Several Chennai firms offer executive search alongside broader staffing. They are genuinely effective at mid-level professional hiring at scale and are the right answer when you need several people quickly.
Less suited to confidential mandates or to roles where the right person is settled and not looking, because the operating model rewards speed over depth of mapping.
What is genuinely different about hiring in Chennai
These matter more than which firm you pick.
- Cost and plant finance depth. The auto components, engineering and manufacturing base produces finance leaders fluent in standard costing, working capital and plant economics. That capability is genuinely scarce in Bangalore or Gurugram and transfers well to any business with inventory.
- Tenures are long and attrition is low. Ten and fifteen year tenures are unremarkable. Excellent for your retention; harder for your search, because the best people are not looking and need a scope argument rather than a raise.
- Three distinct pools, often briefed as one. Plant-facing finance around Ambattur, Sriperumbudur and Oragadam. Corporate and group finance around Guindy, Nandanam and Teynampet. GCC and shared-services along the OMR corridor. Different people, different experience, different expectations.
- Local preference is strong. Candidates who have built lives here move within the city readily and out of it rarely. Relocating a metro candidate in carries higher first-year attrition risk than clients expect.
- Compensation runs 10–15% below Bangalore at equivalent levels, which makes Chennai genuinely cost-effective for a shared-services or manufacturing finance function.
- Tamil matters in specific roles. Not in corporate or GCC settings. In plant-facing, supplier-facing and promoter-facing finance it is a real advantage, and worth establishing at brief stage.

| If your mandate is… | Start with |
|---|---|
| Board seat or CXO succession at a listed Chennai group | Global firm |
| Senior leadership at an established Chennai corporate | Established consultancy or boutique |
| A specific finance profile — costing, controllership, US GAAP | Specialist boutique |

| Several hires at once, or roles below senior leadership | Staffing / volume |
| First India hire for an overseas parent | Boutique with India-entry experience |
Questions worth asking any Chennai firm
- Which city is the person running my search actually in? Several national firms serve Chennai from Bangalore or Mumbai. Worth knowing before you appoint.
- Who have you placed in Chennai in the last twelve months? Not nationally — here.
- Will you show me the target map before approaching anyone? Firms doing genuine mapping can. Firms working a database usually cannot.
- Is the fee on fixed CTC or total CTC? In India total CTC includes employer provident fund, gratuity and variable pay. On a senior package the difference runs to several lakh.
- How do you handle relocation risk? If a firm has not raised first-year attrition for an incoming metro candidate, they have not worked this market.
- What exactly does the replacement guarantee cover? Replacement only, or a refund? Does it apply if you terminate, or only if the candidate resigns?
Where we are the wrong choice
We are a boutique, and that is a genuine trade-off rather than a positioning line. For a board appointment at a large listed group, a multi-country search, or a process needing to carry weight with an international investor base, Stanton Chase, EMA Partners, Cornerstone or one of the global majors is the better answer.
Same for volume hiring, roles below senior leadership, and functions outside finance and technology. We also cap active mandates, so sometimes the honest answer is that we are full. Full list at who we are not for.
Where we do fit
Finance and technology leadership in Chennai — CFO, Finance Director, Financial Controller, Head of Costing, Head of FP&A, CTO and VP Engineering. Partner-led, with the target map approved by you before anyone is approached.
The narrow claim we make: the hardest profile in the region right now is the finance leader who can report under US GAAP or IFRS to an overseas parent while carrying India statutory obligations — Companies Act 2013, GST, TDS, ROC filings, transfer pricing. Most have one side of that. Those with both sit inside established capability centres on the OMR corridor and are not on job boards.

Which is the best executive search firm in Chennai?
There is no single best firm — it depends on the mandate. For board appointments and CXO succession at large listed groups, global firms such as Stanton Chase, EMA Partners, Cornerstone, Korn Ferry and Egon Zehnder are the established choice. For senior leadership at Chennai corporates, established consultancies including Covenant Consultants, ABC Consultants and Alp Consulting have genuine local relationships. For narrow functional mandates in finance or technology, a specialist boutique will usually reach a wider pool. For hiring at scale, staffing firms are the right answer.
Do global executive search firms have a real presence in Chennai?
Some do. Stanton Chase maintains a Chennai presence covering automotive, IT services and global capability centres. EMA Partners and Cornerstone hold international networks with established Chennai relationships. Korn Ferry and Egon Zehnder generally serve the market from Bangalore and Mumbai rather than a dedicated Chennai desk, which is worth establishing before you appoint.
What makes hiring executives in Chennai different from Bangalore?
Three things. Compensation runs roughly 10 to 15 percent below Bangalore at equivalent levels. Tenures are much longer and attrition much lower, which is good for retention but means the strongest candidates are settled rather than searching. And the city has genuine depth in cost accounting, plant finance and working capital from its manufacturing base — capability that is scarce in software-dominated markets.
Should I use a boutique or an established consultancy in Chennai?
Use a global or established consultancy for board appointments, multi-city searches and mandates where institutional credibility matters. Use a specialist boutique for functionally narrow roles, confidential replacements where word travels fast, and searches where you want the person who took the brief to run it. Use staffing firms for several hires at once or roles below senior leadership.
What does a CFO cost in Chennai?
Indicatively 95 to 160 lakh rupees fixed base for a listed or large manufacturing CFO, and 65 to 110 lakh at mid-market or growth stage, plus bonus. Chennai runs roughly 10 to 15 percent below Bangalore at equivalent levels. Full ranges by role are published free, with sourcing stated openly.
How do I tell whether a firm really works the Chennai market?
Ask which city the person running your search actually sits in, who they have placed in Chennai specifically in the last twelve months, and whether they will show you the target map before approaching anyone. Also ask how they handle relocation risk — a firm that has not raised first-year attrition for an incoming metro candidate has not worked this market.
Why do most 'top executive search firms in Chennai' lists look the same?
Because most are published by search or staffing firms themselves, and the publisher generally appears on the list. They also tend to rank by firm size and longevity rather than fit for a specific mandate. A more useful approach is to identify which category of firm your mandate belongs in, then shortlist within that category.
