CFO Recruitment in India

What a CFO costs in India in 2026, why most searches take too long, and how a specialist search partner runs the process differently.

Mumbai · Bangalore · Hyderabad · Chennai · Delhi NCR

A CFO search in India that passes twelve weeks is almost never a market problem. India has genuine depth of finance leadership. What it also has is intense competition for it — and a search process that reaches only the fifth of the market who happen to be actively looking.

Indicative ranges compiled from published surveys, advertised ranges and market reporting. These are fixed base figures; bonus and equity sit on top and vary sharply by stage and sector.

RoleBase (₹ LPA)Typical bonus
CFO — listed / large enterprise₹120–180L25–40%
CFO — growth stage / Series B–D₹80–140L20–30% + equity
CFO — early stage₹60–90LEquity-weighted
Finance Director₹60–120L15–25%
GCC Finance Head (US-backed)₹60–90L20–30%

The most common costly mistake: benchmarking against last year's data. Finance leadership compensation in India has moved materially in eighteen months, driven by GCC expansion and a shortage of CA and ACCA-qualified leaders willing to relocate. An offer built on stale numbers reads as under-market to a candidate holding two others.

Why CFO searches stall

  1. The brief describes the last CFO, not the next one. A company heading into a Series C needs fundraising and investor-reporting depth. The brief often still emphasises the controllership skills that mattered three years ago.
  2. Passive candidates are never approached. The strongest CFOs are employed and not on job boards. A search limited to applicants reaches roughly 20% of the market, and rarely the best fifth.
  3. The process runs too long. Three stages inside four weeks is the standard that wins. Beyond that, candidates with options quietly disengage.
  4. Compensation is benchmarked late. Discovering your range is uncompetitive at offer stage costs you the candidate and the three months invested in reaching them.
  5. A generalist agency is running it. CV volume is not the same as leadership quality. Executive search requires market mapping and domain depth.

Where we place CFOs in India

Pan-India coverage. Mumbai — banking, NBFC, financial services and listed-company CFOs. Bangalore and Hyderabad — SaaS, fintech, GCC and technology-sector finance leadership. Chennai, Coimbatore and Kerala — manufacturing, industrial and delivery-organisation finance. Delhi NCR — promoter groups, family offices and investment firms. We also run mandates in Kolkata, Ahmedabad, Pune and other hubs — those six carry the deepest published detail because that is where most of our search volume sits, but the search itself is not city-limited: we map wherever the candidate is, and run the process the same way regardless of location.

For a CFO appointment where the wrong hire is expensive and the search must stay quiet, retained is usually the right structure. For a Finance Director or Controller where speed matters more than exclusivity, contingency works well.

A CFO search that passes twelve weeks is almost never a market problem. It is a brief problem, a process problem, or a reach problem — and all three are fixable.

How we run a CFO search

  1. Brief and align. Not a job description — the outcomes this CFO must deliver over 24 months, the board dynamic, and the profile that genuinely fits.
  2. Map the market. Every plausible CFO in your sector and geography, including those inside competitors who have never applied for anything.
  3. First shortlist in 48 hours. Three to five leaders, pre-screened for fit and genuine interest — a calibration shortlist. Directly approached passive candidates, who take longer to reach and qualify, arrive in the second and third rounds.
  4. Assess properly. Competency interviews, references, and where useful psychometric profiling to reduce mis-hire risk.
  5. Close and support. Offer negotiation, counter-offer management, and 90 days of post-placement support.

Confidential searches

Replacing a sitting CFO, or searching ahead of a raise you have not announced, requires the search to leave no trace in the market. Those mandates are run partner-led on a strict need-to-know basis, with anonymised briefs to candidates until mutual interest is confirmed, NDAs where required, and no public advertising at any stage.

How much does a CFO cost in India in 2026?

Between 80 lakh and 1.8 crore rupees base salary depending on company stage and sector, plus a 20 to 40 percent bonus. Growth-stage CFOs typically sit at 80 to 140 lakh with equity.

How long does CFO recruitment in India take?

A first shortlist within 48 hours of a full brief, and typically 4 to 8 weeks from brief to signed offer for a CFO appointment. Searches that pass twelve weeks usually have a process problem rather than a market problem.

Should we use retained or contingency search for a CFO?

Retained suits C-suite, confidential and business-critical appointments where full market coverage matters. Contingency suits mid-senior roles where speed matters more than exclusivity and you prefer no upfront cost.

What does a CFO recruitment agency charge in India?

Commercial terms depend on role seniority and engagement type — contingency, exclusive or retained — and are shared in full on the first call, along with a straight answer on which structure fits your search.

Can you run a confidential CFO search?

Yes. Confidential mandates are handled partner-led on a need-to-know basis, with anonymised briefs, NDAs where required, and no public advertising, so the market never learns the role is open.

Which cities do you cover for CFO recruitment in India?

Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Chennai and Delhi NCR, with sector focus varying by city: banking and financial services in Mumbai, technology and GCC leadership in Bangalore and Hyderabad.
