In short
In year one, a GCC finance leader must own four things: statutory and tax compliance in India, clean reporting to the parent, cost and transfer pricing discipline, and building a finance team that can scale with the centre.
1. Statutory and tax ownership
The centre's Indian entity has its own obligations: company law filings, GST, TDS, income tax and transfer pricing documentation. The finance leader must know what is due, who signs it and where the risks sit. This is the reason many centres hire senior finance leadership early, even when technology is the centre's purpose.
2. Reporting to the parent
The parent expects reporting in its own framework and timetable. The finance leader must build a close process that meets both local and parent requirements without duplicating work, and earn the trust of the parent's finance team early.
3. Cost, pricing and budget discipline
Most centres operate on a cost-plus or similar model agreed with the parent. The finance leader owns the budget, the cost base and the transfer pricing position that supports it, and must explain variances clearly to leadership on both sides.
4. Building the finance team
The first-year hires set the standard: controllership, tax, and FP&A as the centre grows. The finance leader should hire for the centre's next stage, not only today's workload.
What this means for hiring
The ideal candidate combines Indian statutory depth with experience reporting to an overseas parent. That combination is scarce, which is why these searches rely on market mapping and direct outreach rather than job postings. See GCC Finance Head recruitment.
